Daily progress

Today I did some research about what are  the risks of using technology.  I learned that there is a probability of the radiation of some things can cause cancer on the human body and can also cause other illness.

DAY 3- Research

DAY 3-  RESEARCH :  How does your topic impact your future digital footprint?
DIGITAL HEALTH & WELLNESS
1.n addition to enhancing health and wellness, technology can also hinder it if you aren’t careful. For example, health issues like carpal tunnel, eye strain, or muscle tension can occur. Medical literature also still debates the long term effects of cell phones on health and wellness. Even constant exposure to people with poor e-mail or cell phone etiquette can affect personal wellness by increasing stress. http://www.manifestexcellence.com/Wellness-and-technology.html

2.Office printer could be posing as much danger to the lungs as a drag on a cigarette, according to air quality tests by Australian scientists. http://www.theage.com.au/news/technology/printers-pose-health-risks-study/2007/07/31/1185647880054.html

3. One research need the committee identified is studies of any potential health consequences from multiple, long-term, low-intensity RF exposure as opposed to most of the present data that evaluates acute effects on healthy adults during short exposures to RF fields. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080117164130.htm

4.  In the case of glioma, a type of brain cancer, and acoustic neuroma, a slow-growing non-cancerous tumour in the inner ear that results in hearing loss, the existing evidence was limited. This means the group found that evidence of a causal relationship between cellphone radiation exposure and increased risk of developing one of those diseases was credible but could not rule out that chance, bias or confounding had played a role in establishing that relationship. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2009/01/22/f-cellphoneshealth.html

5. One thing that I know for sure is that these signals gives awful headaches when you work in a wireless lab where three or four access points are broadcasting at the same time on different channels. I've also heard many stories about people who had their desk located directly under a broadcasting antenna and whom had terrible migraines at the end each day.
 http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2006/02/health-issues-surrounding-use-of.html

6. BBC programme Panorama found that radiation levels from wi-fi in one school was up to three times the level of mobile phone mast radiation.
The readings were 600 times below the government's safety limits but there is ongoing debate about wi-fi use. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6676129.stm

7. For years there have been rumblings that excessive use of cell phones can cause tumors and even cancer, but many have dismissed these reports as unfounded. Recent studies and reports to come out of Canada; however, may have people rethinking the use of wireless technology in their homes, especially as it pertains to wireless routers. Today we're going to take a close look at wireless technology's potential health risks, especially as they pertain to children.
http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/Networking-Hardware/Wireless-Technology-Health-Risks/

8.Due to the rise of wireless mobile technology in recent years, there have been several questions posed on the safety of mobile phones. Mobile phones use electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range and people believe that this may be harmful to the health of human beings. Due to these concerns, there is a large body of research in place. These bodies of research involve both epidemiological and experimental and both on humans and non-humans. More concerns have even been raised regarding other digital wireless systems and data communication networks as well. http://www.medic8.com/healthguide/articles/healthriskmobiles.html

9. A massive study in the UK into the possible health effects of radiation from cellphones has been unable to rule them safe in the long term, and another international study has concluded that what are presently considered to be acceptable exposure levels to radio waves of all frequencies are too high and should be lowered. http://www.itwire.com/business-it-news/technology/14455-more-bad-news-on-the-dangers-of-using-cellphones

10.Technology is taking over. With technology come health problems, just like with cars. If someone drives a car all day long (like taxi drivers) they could have some serious back problems.

Digital Access :P

America Offline-
What does this mean?
this talks about how millions of people dont have regular internet compared to others who have way better internet access.

digital divide-
How does this impact you as a students?
It impacts me because as a student because others and I need better access to internet to be able to do work and succed in what we are trying to do.

Unequal Access-
How can lack of access to the internet impact your future? MOBILE ACCESS
It can keep me from getting the best information out there and it can keep my from using time wisely.

Innovators-
How will lack of digital access impact us as a country?
People will start noticing how our internet is way slower than other places  and they will want to tell the goverment.1) What are the options for better Access?

Options for having better access are to provide a more inexpensive internet to the community or to provide digital access for rural areas. Having access in more places.

2) Explain the Final Recommendations?
Government should be more aware that people don't have access to fast internet yet they pay a lot for it. They should also know that some people don't use the internet for the right reasons.

3) What could be done to increase internet access and create more choices for communities nationwide?

The communities should come together and tell the government about their ideas of making the internet faster and to make the internet have a wider range of service.

4) What actions need to be taken to keep the internet open for users and innovators?

The government needs to understand that people don't have internet just for fun, but for work and being able to communicate with others. They need to let people have a better internet for a lower price.

Reflection

I have not been able to test my PowerPoint presentation on the 6th graders, so I am not sure if my end product actually works and teaches what the Design Cycle means and how it works. I think if I had been able to give the tests to the 6th graders, I would have done an okay job on teaching them what the Design Cycle means and teaching them how to use it.

Evaluation

Investigate- In this stage, I had a bit of trouble figuring out what to do for my project. I looked for many tools I could use to make a simple and fun video for the 6th graders to look watch and learn what the design cycle is and what it is for. I think if i had a bit more time or if I used my time more wisely, I coudlve found a better program other than PowerPoint to use.
Design- In the design stage, I wasnt sure what to design. I already knew that I wanted yo use the Power Point program because it was going to be simple and easy to make and understand. I designed 3 different lists of what I wanted to put on each slide I was going to put in the Power Point. I ended up using the most detailed design. I added some changes to the powerpoint because I didn't think it was enough. I could've done a better job if I had access to a pin drive so I could take the Power Point with me, or if I had chosen a program that was on the internet, I could've worked on it in more places.
Plan- On the plan stage, I planned out how much time I was going to spend in each thing I was going to put on the Power Point. I made a gantt chart so I could know and remember how much time I was supposed to spend on each thing and not to waste anytime on something I didn't need to waste time on. Unfortunately, I didn't follow the timing on the gantt chart i created. I wasted time on other things and I know I could've done a better job if I had spent the appropriate time on the right things.
Create- I the create stage, I created a PowerPoint. I followed one of my designs, but i made some changes to it. I made changes because I thought it wasn't enough things to put on the project. I needed more information on the slides so when i was creating my project, I added more information to it. I did my project kind of last minute and i would've done a better job if I had started way before than I actually started.
Evaluate- In this stage, i am evaluating my self. I don't know if my product was a success because I did not get to test my product out. I made tests for the 6th graders to take but i didn't have a chance to actually give it to them. At the end, I realized how I didn't put a lot of effort into my product. I know if I had put more time into it it would've been a way better project.
Attitudes in Technology- My attitudes in technology where not as good as I expected them to be. I think I should've put in more effort and my project would've been a better project than it is. I didn't use enough time to do my project. Next time, i will try my best to focus on doing my best and completing a well done product.

IA Part II

1. How can my learning help my community?
My learning can help my community because by learning, I can teach others what i have learned and help them with problems they may have or questions and I will already know. Teaching others what I have learned will help them with thier lives and it will help them make their lifes easier.
2. How can your future projects become better?
My future projects can become better in the future because by evaluating myself on my Design Cycle project, I learned how to fix my mistakes. I also learned that I have to use my time more wisely than I did for this project.I will use the design cycle more often now because it makes doing propjects way more easier and its a more organized way to do projects.
3. What have you learned about yourself and what you will continue to do or not to do and why?
I learned that i get distracted very easily, I dont want to continue to keep getting distracted by everything so next time, i will try to keep more focus on what I am doing and I will try harder on my project next time.
4.How do you feel about your final product? What would you rate yourself on the Rubric scale of 1-6 for each part of the Assessment Criterion?
I think my final product was good, but there was a lot of room for improvement.
I would rate myself a 4 on investigation because I looked for tools to use but at the last minute i wasnt sure what i was going to use.
On the design stage, i rate myself a 5 because I created 3 designs on which i choose what i thought was the best one.
On the plan stage, I rate myself a 4 because I planned what I thought needed to be done in order to get the product how I wanted it.
On the create stage, i rated myself a 4 because I think I did a good job but i think i could do a way better job if I i tried better and used my time more wisely.
On the evaluation stage, i rated myself a 4 because I evaluated myself and i think i did an okay job with my final product.
On the attitudes ib technology, i rated myself a 4 because I kept getting distracted with other things and I didnt try my best on compliting the product, i also didnt use my time as wisely as i should have.
5. What would you do differently in regards to your planning and execution of your plan?
What I would do differrently in my plan is that I would probably use another program other than PowerPoint to create my project. I would also use my time more wisely.

Investigation Reflection

10. Write a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and for whom you are making it.
I am going to make a power point presentation, i will make this because it will be easy to make and it will be simple to understand. This will will made towards the 6th graders. I would like them to understand the meaning of using the design cycle and how to use it. I will use the program PowerPoint to complete this task.
Formulate a Design Specification
11. What are the requirements for this assignment?
My requirements for this assignment is to make a product that will help 6th graders understand the definition of design cycle and know how to use it. i want my final product to be understandable and to be interesting to the 6th graders.

  • colorful
  •  simple
  • minimum of 3 minutes
  • easy to create
  • be able to continue working on it at home
  • fun but not distracting
  • actually teaches something
  • Made by Microsoft PowerPoint program
12. What are the limitations you have with this assignment?
The limitations that i have with this assignment is that there is not that many interesting backgrounds to use in the slides. I would want the slides to be colorful and fun to catch the learner, in this situation, the 6th grader's attention.
13. How will you "test" your project?
To test my project, i will make surveys with 10 questions each, if the 6th graders understand, complete and answer 7 at the least right, then i succeeded on teaching them how to use the design cycle and showing them what it means.

PowerPoint

For THEME, i rated this a 3 because the powerpoint program has different themes but they are not that attractive to look at.I want very colorful and interesting themes that will catch the attention of the 6th graders and help them pay attention. I would like to have a choice between many themes to make sure they are interesting and colorful so the sixth graders can be interested in them. They are too simple but they look professional, so im not sure if the 6th grader is going to be interested in the powerpoint. I am not sure if i should use this because he themes are not so interesting.
For SIMPLICITY, i rated it a 4 because it is very simple to understand and it doesn't take to much work to understand.I would like a program that i knew how to use already so i wouldn't spend time  trying to learn how it works.  It can also be colorful if i decide to choose a bright theme or font. It could be a possibility for me to use this program because it is simple to me and i understand how to use it much better than ComicMaster.
For CHARACTER, i rated it a 2 because the powerpoint doesnt really have character to put in the slides but if I could look up pictures to in the slides to make it more colorful and interesting. I want a program that has different characters or something that the 6th graders would find fun. I think i could find something fun to put in the PowerPoint but it would be much easier to use ComicMaster because that program already includes characters and props to choose from.
For FONTS, I rated it a 5 because I can choose from many colors and fonts from the powerpoint. I would like the fonts to be very colorful and be attractive to the 6th graders. I can also choose the size or i can make words into wordart to make it as colorful as i can. I like using PowerPoint because of its colorful and easy to use fonts. It would be so much easier if i chose this program.
I may end up using this for my project because its just so much easier to use and it is more simple to create a project with. I can change most of the things that i want to use and it will be easier for me to be more creative with my project and also it will be less complicated for me to create because i am more familiar with PowerPoint.

ComicMaster

For THEME, I rated this a 4 because they have good colorful themes but there are not man to choose from. I want very colorful and interesting themes that will catch the attention of the 6th graders and help them pay attention. I would like to have a choice between many themes to make sure they are interesting and colorful so the sixth graders can be interested in them. This would be a reason to choose this program  because it has colorful.
For SIMPLICITY, I rated this a 3 because it is fun and easy to understand. I would like a program that i knew how to use already so i wouldn't spend time  trying to learn how it works. The student would understand because it is colorful and it isnt to much words, it is mostly pictures so that the student can be interested and attracted to the comic. I don't know if this will be so simple for me to create because Im not familiar with it and maybe i wont use ComicMaster because of this.
For CHARACTER, I rated it a 4 because ComicMaster has different characters in the comic that you can use. I want a program that has different characters or something that the 6th graders would find fun.I would like to use this program because it would help me catch the attention of the 6th graders and they would be more than interested in the project because of these characters. The PowerPoint doesn't have these features so this is an advantage of this program.
For FONTS, I rated it a 2 because u dont really have fonts to choose from. I would like the fonts to be very colorful and be attractive to the 6th graders. The good thing is that there is different words included in the program that you can use to paste in the comic. This a disadvantage of this program because i wont be able to change what i want for the project. I think PowerPoint will be better to use fonts with.
I will not be using this program for my project because i think it would be much easier for me to use PowerPoint because i understand it more.

Thursday, September 15, 2011

I would like to create something that is interesting and fun. i want the 6th graders to be actually able to learn how to use the design cycle and learn what it is. I probably wont use the computer to do my project because i don't see many tools on the internet that are helpful and that i understand.

Comic Master is a tool that can help you make a comic strip. This tool is fun, colorful, and interesting. The disadvantage of Comic Master is that the things you can use are limited and in my point of view, not so helpful.

PowerPoint
Is a program that helps people make slide shows. This program could be helpful and I could make it intresting for the 6th graders to learn and understand the design cycle.
